In a fiery debate in the Lok Sabha, YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy strongly opposed the proposed reduction in the capacity of the Polavaram project, a move he described as a serious setback for farmers and the people of Andhra Pradesh. Reddy emphasized that the Polavaram project, originally designed to provide water for irrigation and drinking purposes to 7.5 lakh acres, was expected to deliver 194 TMC of water. However, recent budget proposals suggest reducing its capacity to 115 TMC, limiting its coverage to just 3.2 lakh acres. He labeled this change as a grave injustice, stating that the YSRCP and TDP MPs would unite to prevent this reduction, urging the government to honor the project’s original design as per the division agreement.
Reddy also highlighted the persistent issue of Andhra Pradesh’s lack of special status, criticizing the government’s failure to fulfill promises made, including the proposed reduction in Polavaram’s capacity. He raised concerns over how vital water supply to regions like Banakacharla and Rayalaseema would be managed with such a reduced capacity.
On the education front, Reddy raised alarming concerns regarding the gradual phasing out of English medium in government schools. He stressed that proficiency in English is crucial for securing corporate jobs and urged for both English and Telugu to continue being taught in schools to equip students with necessary skills for future opportunities.
Addressing financial irregularities, Reddy demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged Rs. 2600 crore scam involving Margadarsi, a company that he accused of violating RBI regulations. Comparing it to the notorious Sahara Saradha scam, he called for swift action to ensure that depositors’ money is returned.
Reddy also voiced strong opposition to the privatization of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, urging the government to halt the process and instead engage in direct discussions with the Jindal Group regarding the proposed Kadapa Steel Plant.
In his speech, Reddy didn’t shy away from addressing the growing drug menace among students. He called for urgent and stringent measures from the central government to combat the issue, ensuring a safer future for the youth.
Through his remarks, Midhun Reddy raised critical issues affecting the state, ranging from vital infrastructure projects to education, finance, and social problems, demanding immediate attention from the government.
