Hyderabad: Telangana has become the only state in India to establish a medical college in every district, according to BRS senior leader and former minister Harish Rao. This historic achievement follows the recent approval of four new medical colleges, bringing the total to 34 government medical colleges in the state, a significant increase from just five before its formation.
Under the leadership of former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, Telangana has added 29 new medical colleges in the last nine years, raising the number of MBBS seats from 850 in 2014 to 4,090 today. This expansion enables the state to produce over 10,000 doctors annually, addressing local and global healthcare needs.
Harish Rao congratulated the communities of Yadadri, Medak, Maheshwaram, and Quthbullapur for the newly approved colleges, emphasizing that despite challenges under the previous Congress government, Telangana secured funding and land for eight new medical colleges. He noted that the state now boasts 22 MBBS seats per lakh people, a national record.
Despite the Central government not allocating any of the 157 new medical colleges to Telangana, Rao highlighted the state’s initiative to establish 29 colleges independently. This progress allows Telangana students to pursue medical education locally, avoiding the need to study abroad in countries like China, Ukraine, or the Philippines.
