In a significant development for urban transport in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has taken a major step towards launching the Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada metro rail projects. On Thursday, the government issued formal orders to begin the land acquisition process for both projects, signaling a move forward in the ambitious metro rail plans for these two cities.
Key Highlights:
- Phase-I Approval: The metro rail projects for Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada received approval in December 2024. The Visakhapatnam metro rail project is estimated at ₹11,498 crore, while the Vijayawada metro rail stands at ₹11,009 crore.
The district Collectors of Visakhapatnam and NTR have been directed to submit the necessary details for publishing notifications as per legal requirements.
Andhra Pradesh’s Request for Central Support:
In a bid to expedite the projects, the Andhra Pradesh government has urged the Central Government to provide 100% funding for both metro rail projects in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.
The approval and land acquisition process for these metro rail projects mark a major leap in transforming public transport infrastructure in the state, providing efficient connectivity and boosting urban development.
