There is no Indian who does not know the name Tata. Tata’s name is heard in everything from salt to steel, from tea to trucks. With a value of 23 lakh crore rupees and approximately 8 lakh employees, the Tata Company stands first as the largest business empire in our country. Ratan Tata is the man who has successfully run such a big company.
Tata Group is bigger than Reliance, Aditya Birla, and ADAG, which are the largest companies in the country. But why is Tata never on the list of richest people despite being such a big company? Also, let’s know about this Tata group which has a history of around 150 years and about Ratan Tata who led it…!!
Tata Company first started as a textile mill. It was founded by Jamshetji Tata. Thus, this company started in 1868 and has been changing hands for generations. Tata Lay was the first to start an airline company in our country. The airline now called Air India was originally Tata Airlines but after World War II it was taken over by the government. Back in 2022 Air India was taken over by Tata Group.
Not only this, Tata was also the first steel company in Asia, and also the first hotel in our country, the Taj Hotel. In this way, many new businesses have been introduced to our country. The role of Tatas in the construction and development of the country is so great. Among them all we have to mention Ratan Tata…
Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in the country’s richest family. His parents separated when he was 10 years old and he grew up with his grandmother. Later he completed engineering at Cornell University in America. Immediately got a job in IBM company. But when JRD Tata advised Ratan Tata to come to India and join Tata Steel, he came to India from America and started his career as an apprentice at Jamshedpur Tata Steel Plant.
Later in 1991, JRD Tata appointed Ratan Tata as the Chairman of the Tata Group. Many board members at that time took this decision wrong. Ratan Tata, who had no experience, was opposed to putting so many crores of rupees in his hands. But Ratan Tata proved them wrong. Tata Group ran during his tenure. Ratan Tata increased the business which should have been Rs 10000 crore to Rs 23 lakh crore.
And despite running such a big company, Ratan Tata has never appeared in India’s or the world’s rich list. Do you know why 66% of the profits of the Tata Company go to voluntary organizations run by the Tata Trust? If all this property belonged to Ratan Tata and not to service companies, then Ratan Tata would have been among the top three richest people in the world.
Ratan Tata faced many obstacles and insults in his journey. Let’s give an example. In 1998, Ratan Tata introduced Tata Indica cars. Those cars failed in the first year. So everyone advised to sell Tata Indica. Tata also agreed to it and Tata and his team went to Ford Company in America to sell the Indica car business. But in that meeting with the chairman of Ford company, Ratan Tata, “Why did you start a car business when you don’t know how to make cars” and he insulted Tata and his team. So Tata came back to Mumbai without talking about the deal.
A few years later Tata Indica turned from losses to profits. At the same time, the luxury cars of Ford company Jaguar-Land Rover companies have gone into heavy losses. At that time Ratan Tata offered Ford company and Jaguar-Land Rover two companies. This time the team of Ford Company reached Mumbai from America and met Tata. He bought the loss-making Jaguar-Land Rovers for Rs 9,300 crores and brought them back to profit. In this way, Ratan Tata made those who insulted and looked down on him come close to him.
Not only this, he bought a European steel company called Corus. Also, Tata Tea became the second largest tea company in the world by buying Tetly Tea Company of England and merging it with Tata Tea. Once the Britishers who ruled our Indians have now risen to the level of giving employees under them to the same Britishers. Not only this, Ratan Tata has transformed Tata into an international brand by incorporating more than 22 international companies from other countries into the Tata group.
The Tatas never wanted India to become an economic superpower. India wanted to grow as a happy nation. That is why they worked hard for the poor and middle classes. An example of that is the Tata Nano car. Once Ratan Tata was traveling in his car when he saw a husband, wife, and two children riding a scooter in the rain. Immediately he wanted to make a car for one lakh rupees to make it accessible to the poor and middle classes. Many people laughed when he said this. Scared how to make a car for one lakh rupees. Some have redeemed themselves. But Tata did not back down. Engineers were called. But they said that it is not possible to make a car for one lakh rupees. But Ratan Tata did not listen. Bravely stepped forward. Finally, the cheapest car in the world has been released. The whole world was shocked. But due to some reasons, the Nano car was a bit of a failure. Ratan Tata did not stop making nano cars even though they were losing thousands of crores. Because it was his dream car. His dream is to make every poor person’s dream of traveling in a car come true.
Ratan Tata has faced many difficulties in his long journey as a businessman. After the entire construction of the plant in West Bengal for the manufacture of nano cars was completed, the people there opposed it, so it was very difficult to move the entire plant from West Bengal to Gujarat. Also, in 2008, terrorists attacked the Taj Hotel belonging to the Tata Group.
Another thing we don’t know is that Ratan Tata is not married. He fell in love with a girl while he was in America. However, after completing his studies, Tata had to come to India from America. That girl is also ready to come to India. At the same time, Ratan Tata said in a TV interview that the girl did not come to India because of the war between India and China and married someone else in America. So after that, I don’t think about marriage anymore.
Ratan Tata, who has reached the age of 84 years, has not lost any energy. Even now, his hobby is driving Falcon planes, helicopters, and super-fast cars that travel at a speed of 2000 km per hour.
Ratan Tata has good faith in youth and their power. That’s why Snapdeal, Paytm, Cardekho, Bluestone, Ola, Xiaomi, etc. have invested in more than 39 StartUps and encouraged them…!!
Business in general means profits, expansion, and succession. But Tata is not like that, Tata Group has never done business for its family or to accumulate personal assets. Tata Group is the only company in the world to spend 66% of its profits on community service. Most of what the Tatas earn is spent on the society. That is why Tata has established itself as a trusted brand among Indians
Honesty and ethical values are in the Tata Group’s DNA. When the terrorists attacked the Taj Hotel, the bravery shown by the employees of the hotel is proof of that, even in such a terrible situation, no employee saved more than 1500 guests of their hotel without counting their lives. As part of that effort, many employees lost their lives. This made the world understand how much the Tata Group values.
Tata Trust also works towards providing education, employment, and health to the poor people in remote areas of the country. Till now many Indian students who are studying abroad along with our country are receiving scholarships through Tata Trust. Also, Ratan Tata especially served the families of the dead who were injured in the terrorist attack at the Taj Hotel. Not only that, Ratan Tata donated more than 300 crore rupees to Harvard University in America. For that, Harvard University named a building on its campus Tata Hall. Ratan Tata donated 1000 crores for cancer patients as a Diwali gift for one year.
In recognition of his many services, the Government of India honored him with Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. Many universities around the world honored him with doctorates. It is a matter of pride for us that Ratan Tata, who is a role model for the entire industrial world, belongs to our country.
Ratan Tata once said that he was unfit to do business, but now he has transformed an organization worth 10000 crore rupees into a business empire worth 23 lakh crore rupees under his leadership. Now there is no sector that Tata has not stepped into. This company runs more than 96 businesses like Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Tea, TCS, Chemicals, Tele Services, Hotels, Power, Electronics, Insurance, etc. Despite being such a big industrialist, his lifestyle is very simple. They stay away from media meetings. Ratan Tata is a person who does not even have the minimum pride and arrogance that a businessman should have.
Above all, they have achieved 100 percent success in maintaining the belief that Tata is a value-based brand in the minds of the people from generation to generation. In terms of money, he may not be very rich. But in goodness, he is a stranger. That’s why Ratan Tata remains a respected businessman who is loved by all Indians…!!
